Maiensässweiler Canols
The northern, older part of the lake was formed when the water collected between moraines and landslide masses after the last ice age. The first mention of the lake dates back to 1484, when the Bishop of Chur, Ortlieb von Brandis, had a fish pond built in its northern part.
In 1881, the diocese sold the lake to the “Haidsee-Konsortium Brügger & Meier” for 12,000 francs. The driving force behind this consortium was the Churwalden hoteliers Johann Brügger-Battaglia and his son Georg Brügger-Vieli. They enlarged the lake and built a “fisherman’s hut” on an island, known as the Insel-Châlet. Guests could eat and stay overnight here. Johann and Georg Brügger thus laid the foundations for tourism in Maiensässweiler Canols (now Valbella) and created the “scenic jewel” of the high valley with the lake dam.[1]
